Young People – BIG Investment

Big Lottery Fund is developing a new, multi-million pound investment for young people across England.

Young people are at the heart of designing this investment. Around 20 young people from across England are working with the Big Lottery Fund on this. Over the next 2 months these young people will work with BIG to decide the priority areas to fund.

In the last week they have talked to over 1,000 other young people in their local areas (face to face and via social media) and reviewed over 50 pieces of evidence. They have also reviewed academic and policy evidence and debated priority issues.

Positive thinking...

Temitope, aged 20 said: ‘I feel really good and pro-active about this programme. I really do feel this is the most powerful and thought provoking project for young people that BIG can do.’

Daniel, aged 18 said: ‘I am very positive about the BIG process. The group are fantastic and we have all contributed really well to every conversation and every piece of work.’

These are the emerging priorities:

  • Unemployment (including NEET, education and training)
  • Leisure plus (constructive places to go with good support services)
  • Safety (violence and gangs)
  • Young people’s portrayal in the media
  • Young people’s self image and identity
  • Health and wellbeing (mental health, stress, bullying, sexual health and substances)

This is a great opportunity.BIG is doing something really exciting and we hope other funders and agencies will do the same.

We want to hear from more young people and are using social media to engage them and let them know what we are doing. Please help us by promoting these networks to young people in your area:

Cabinet Office issues new policy directions for BIG

Last year responsibility for the Big Lottery Fund (BIG), including setting policy directions, transferred from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to the Cabinet Office. The revised policy directions follow a 12-week consultation conducted by the Cabinet Office. These new policy directions cover BIG’s spending in England, the Isle of Man and UK-wide spending. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland policy directions are issued by the devolved administrations.

Responding to the new directions, Peter Ainsworth, BIG’s UK Chair, said: “BIG welcomes the new policy directions issued by the Cabinet Office. The directions reflect a change in sponsor department for BIG and restate our funding focus to support communities and people in greatest need.

“The directions give us the flexibility to fund what works for communities, to focus on local and national issues, to involve people, develop partnerships and to share with others the learning from our funding and initiatives. I have been clear on the importance of the additionality principle and am pleased that this principle is preserved in the directions. We now look forward to delivering against these policy directions, using Lottery investments effectively for the benefit of communities across the country.”
